Shoulder blade pain can be puzzling, especially if it doesn’t seem tied to any specific injury. At Trailblaze PT & Performance in Hendersonville, NC, we often see this kind of pain and know it’s rarely caused by the shoulder blade itself.
In many cases, shoulder blade pain comes from the cervical spine (neck). Improving neck mobility and strength can help relieve discomfort and prevent it from coming back. Here are some exercises to try:
- SNAGs (Sustained Natural Apophyseal Glides): Use a towel to gently assist your neck as you move side to side or look up and down.
- Deep Neck Flexion Strength: Lie on your back, tuck your chin, and lift your head slightly off the floor. Hold for 5 seconds and repeat 10–15 times.
- Quadruped Shoulder Rotations: On hands and knees, reach one arm under your body and then rotate upward, following your hand with your eyes. Do 10 reps per side.
